Who was Alexei Navalny?

Alexei Navalny, a vehement critic of President Putin and Political Adversary for more than a decade, who was against official corruption and staged massive anti-Kremlin protests as President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest foe, died Friday 16th Feb 2024 in the Arctic penal colony where he was serving a 19-year sentence, Russia’s prison agency said. He was 47 old former lawyer.

On his social media  X account, his Valentine’s Day message to his wife Yulia in Russian reads ” Baby, everything is like in a song with you: between us, there are cities, the take-off lights of airfields, blue snowstorms and thousands of kilometers. But I feel that you are near every second, and I love you more and more” 

Alexei Navalny built a national following with campaigns that channeled public outrage over corruption at the highest level of government — and promoted a vision that Russians could, one day, live differently. The West leaders blamed Putin and his government for the 47-year-old’s death which followed months of deteriorating health in harsh detention conditions.
