Pakistan Election: Historic Public Defiance against Military and its Staged Political Actors

In the recent Pakistan election, the political landscape witnessed a seismic shift as Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged victorious, securing a substantial majority in the National Assembly and clinching significant victories in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) provinces. The election results not only solidify Imran Khan’s position as a political force but also raise questions about the role of the military in Pakistan politics, with allegations of rigging and interference.

Foreign governments have raised concerns about interference in Pakistan’s election. Recently, the US also called for an investigation into alleged interference or fraud related to the vote. The  State Department spokesman agreed with assessments that the elections had undue restrictions on freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly. Similar concerns on fair and free elections were also raised by the UK, European Union, and Australia.

Despite the positive aspects, the resolution to the issues in Pakistan election was sudden and difficult. The system malfunctioned, resulting in individuals who ended the night with losses waking up with unexpected gains the next morning. Additionally, in some areas, the number of accepted votes was counted as higher than the actual number of votes cast.

Cordelia Lynch, Asia correspondent of British news outlet Sky News was referring to the rigging in general elections as claimed by so many PTI independents candidates. There are widespread claims of election rigging and continued intimidation of returning officers at polling stations.

The post-election landscape hints at coalition government PDM 2.0 again with it’s super flop attempt as short lived PDM government post ouster of Imran Khan.  However, a renewed focus on the principles of democracy and the will of the people as Pakistan charts its course into the future.
