CybertruckTesla recalled more than 27,000 Cybertrucks for rearview camera issue

Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck has been making headlines once again, but this time, it’s for all the wrong reasons. Tesla recalled more than 27,000 Cybertrucks for rearview camera issue.  The recall relates to the backup camera on some of the Cybertrucks where, in some cases, the image seen by the driver is delayed after shifting into reverse. This can lead to accident as drivers who are relying on the images they are seeing are not actually seeing what is happening in real-time. As such, the NHTSA says these cameras “fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard” on real visibility.

The Cybertruck’s delayed rear-view camera image can result in a blank display for up to six to eight seconds when reversing. This delay occurs because the system might not complete its shutdown process before rebooting. Tesla reported this issue to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, noting that the image may not appear within two seconds of shifting into reverse.

The Cybertruck: A Bold Step into the Future

When Tesla unveiled this in November 2019, it instantly became a polarizing figure in the automotive world. Its sharp, angular design looked like something straight out of a sci-fi film, breaking away from the traditional design norms of pickup trucks. Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk claimed the Cybertruck would be a game-changer in the electric vehicle (EV) space, offering unparalleled durability, off-road capability, and advanced technology features, all while running on a fully electric powertrain.

The initial excitement around the this was immense. Pre-orders skyrocketed, with customers eager to be part of the electric revolution. Tesla’s fan base, known for its loyalty, quickly rallied around the vehicle, despite concerns over its unorthodox design and practicality.

Although no accidents or injuries have been linked to the issue so far, the delay is concerning as it significantly increases the risk of a crash.

Market Acceptance: A Mixed Bag

As production delays pushed it’s launch date from 2021 to late 2023, the initial excitement around the vehicle began to wane slightly. Nevertheless, the anticipation remained high, especially as traditional automakers like Ford and Rivian launched their own electric pickups. Once the first vehicle hit the roads, the real-world reception was a mix of praise and skepticism.

Pros:

  • Futuristic Design: The Cybertruck’s design may be polarizing, but there’s no denying that it stands out. Its sharp lines and stainless steel body give it a unique, rugged appearance, drawing attention wherever it goes.
  • Power and Range: Tesla’s electric powertrain delivers impressive torque and acceleration, making the Cybertruck competitive in the performance category. With its promised long-range battery options, it’s an attractive option for those looking for an electric alternative to gas-guzzling trucks.
  • Advanced Technology: Like all Teslas, the Cybertruck boasts a suite of advanced features, including Autopilot, full self-driving potential (still in beta), and over-the-air software updates, which allow the truck to improve and evolve over time.
  • Durability: The stainless steel exoskeleton and “shatterproof” glass (despite a failed demo at its unveiling) are designed to make the Cybertruck one of the most durable vehicles on the market.

Cons:

  • Design Concerns: While some love the Cybertruck’s futuristic look, others find it too extreme and impractical. Its bulky, angular design raises concerns about aerodynamics, visibility, and ease of parking in urban environments.
  • Production Delays and Recalls: Tesla has struggled with meeting its production deadlines, leading to significant delays. And now, the repeated recalls have further dampened consumer confidence.
  • Unproven Off-Road Capabilities: While Tesla has marketed the Cybertruck as a vehicle ready for rugged terrain, it’s still relatively untested in extreme off-road conditions, compared to more established truck brands like Ford or Chevrolet.

Production Challenges

Deliveries of the Cybertruck began in November 2023 after a two-year delay caused by production challenges and battery supply issues. Despite starting deliveries, Tesla has not yet disclosed specific production or delivery numbers for the Cybertruck.

Elon Musk launched the Blade Runner-inspired truck to revamp Tesla’s lineup amid reduced demand for electric vehicles. Earlier recalls for the Cybertruck addressed a loose accelerator pedal pad in April and windshield wiper and exterior trim issues in June, highlighting ongoing quality control challenges for Tesla’s new vehicle model.
