Alexandra Föderl-Schmid: Mystery surrounds

The well-known Upper Austrian journalist, Alexandra Föderl-Schmid who was being searched for on Thursday as part of a large-scale operation in the border (Germany) area around Braunau, was discovered outdoors by an Austrian police officer at around 11 a.m., according to information from the “Krone” newspaper.

German and Austrian emergency services were searching around the Inn for the missing “Süddeutsche Zeitung” journalist Alexandra Föderl-Schmid.

She had spoken to her brother on the phone early on Thursday morning and had since disappeared. However, the drama surrounding a prominent journalist finds a happy ending.

The Red Cross was alerted immediately. The 53-year-old woman from Mühlviertel was severely hypothermic but responsive and was immediately taken to the shock room at Braunau Hospital.

The 53-year-old Austrian has been deputy editor-in-chief of the Münchner Blatt since 2020. From 2007 to 2017, Föderl-Schmid was editor-in-chief of the Vienna “Standard”, then she moved to “SZ”, for which she initially reported from Israel as a correspondent.

Born in Haslach an der Mühl, Upper Austria, Föderl-Schmid studied at the University of Salzburg followed by a doctorate in Communications Studies, also from the University of Salzburg.

She served as editor-in-chief of Der Standard from 2007 until 2017.

The missing woman had recently temporarily withdrawn from the SZ’s day-to-day business after allegations of possible plagiarism fragments in her doctoral thesis were made.
